Tina Marie’s cafe -Bakersfield, Ca
An honest review
Portion size: 5/5
Food quality: 4/5
My husband and I woke up late one morning and we could not make up our minds on where to eat in the armpit city of Bakersfield. When Tina Marie’s randomly popped into my mind. I didn’t know where it was but I knew I had to listen to myself and ventured my way other there. So dragging my husband behind me, I set out to find this restaurant.
Tina Marie’s is located in downtown Bakersfield in a tight corner space of a building. On the outside, it was decorated cutely with art blasting Tina’s name all over the place. My husband was already skeptical about eating here and I could tell the gloating sign outside wasn’t helping.
As we stepped inside the restaurant, we were met with an unexpected surprise! The room was beautifully decorated with a large tree and an Alice in wonderful meets forest wood elf of lord of the rings vibe of a wooden table. It was a pleasantly refreshing decore and definitely giving out a fun vibe.
Before we could even process what we were seeing the very first server that saw us acknowledge us and let us know they’d be right with us. Which is just something I freaking love! It’s one of my pet peeves to come into a restaurant and wait without being acknowledged.
In my years in the food industry, it's one of the first things we learn! Greet your guests when they walk in! When you don’t, you are literally ignoring them. When you see them, you should always take a second as you walk by to say, “ HI. someone will be right with you” it’s so easy and it makes the guest feel like they will be catered to when the time is right. Makes it easier for the guests to wait.
So anyway, we were acknowledged right away and as we patiently waited for a server to seat us; our eyes feasted on the heavily decorated restaurant that layout before us. We were lead to the first both and quickly realized we were in for a treat.
Our waitress was so attentive and gladly answered any and all of our questions. When we order, to our surprise the food came so quickly! The cook back was basically throwing food out of the kitchen. And I mean this as a compliment, not a complaint.
Now let’s get down to the food. We ordered two breakfast plates that came with a biscuit topped with gravy on the side. The portion sizes were enormous and we definitely had to take to-go boxes home.
The biscuit and gravy were not my favorite; I definitely have had better, but they weren’t bad! The rest of the food was filling and fresh and we were extremely satisfied with our breakfast.
After our visit we both agreed that Tina most definitely deserved her name blasted on the outside of the building because her cafe is rocking, poppin’ and full of style.

Good ol Bakersfield
1st in the county
9th in the state
52 in the country
I wanted to make a post on Bakersfield Because well, it’s my home town! And I kinda like it. Yes, the people are a little iffy.. and the smell takes some getting used to (I make jokes) but, it has a lot to offer! From a wide range of food and entertainment! If you’re wondering where or what to do in this country town then you came to the right place.
Oh lord do I love me some good food. I love it a little too much I had to jump up another pants size this year. Sad face. But, I mean in my defense there are soooo many great places to stuff your face, how can I not gain another 20lb?!!! Below is a SMALL list of our top favorite places to grub out in Bako! If you are looking for a more detailed list of our top-rated picks that will be coming out in a whole post on its own soon!
Vatos started off as a food truck and only just recently opened up their restaurant on the east side. The owner used to work out in the oilfields and instead chose to leave that behind to Pursue Vatos Tacos instead and, we are all glad he did! Especially my husband, who has visited at least 6 times this month.
Check out some of the gold they have on the menu your mouth will water!
2. Milts coffee shop
My husband and I love to grab breakfast here from time to time. The portions are great, the food tastes great, and the service is great! What more can we ask for?!? This place is sorta hidden, and if you don’t want to take the drive you can always visit their sister store 24th street cafe, but between you and me the portions are slightly bigger at milts.
3. Mama Roomba
Mama Roomba a little Caribbean restaurant downtown. It’s small but man the food packs a Big punch! The vibe is popping in there too! Beautifully decorated, and worth checking out! It’s perfect for that romantic date and it’s fit for family-style dinners. I can speak for all of Bakersfield when we say that place is GOOD!
4. Jerry’s pizza and pub
Time and time again Jerry’s pizza always lives up to my expectations! If it’s drunk family times, pub crawls, concerts or just simply lunch, Jerry’s always comes through! They have a generous menu that’s not too pricey and the pizza slices are huge. It’s a cool cat stop. ;)
5. Bill Lee’s bamboo chopsticks
One of my all-time favorite restaurants since I can remember! The food is superb, the decor is nice and the service is always quick and friendly. I have never had a bad experience there. We always get the combination plate, and we almost always have food to take home. This place is a bit on the fancier side but nothing too crazy, I still show up in my sweatpants but, I have no shame.
Entertainment is hard to come by in Bakersfield, at least that’s what most people think. But there are actually a wide variety of things to do and places to see.
If you are looking for family fun we recommend the following:
Local owned the BLVD is a fun place to go with the kids and without. They have laser tag, bowling, games and more. They even have a ropes course! Lots of fun for the whole family!
Bakersfield Ice Sports
The Ice sports are opened to the public for Ice skating from time to time, it's a pretty fun date idea or just to take the kids and get their wiggles out. Just be safe out there because if you fall too hard you WILL have a bruise for a couple of weeks...I know from first-hand experience.
19th street antique walk.
19th street in downtown Bakersfield is where it's poppin when it comes to antique stores. This street has two of the biggest and might I add funnest...Antique stores in Bakersfield. One being Merry Go Round with two stories of antique goodies as well as an antique of vintage clothes! Also, down on the second floor, you can see the underground mining tunnels from Bakersfield’s long past. Right across the way is the Five and Dime Woolworth’s antique mall. Not only is the mall filled to the brim of vintage and long-forgotten items, but it's also home to one really rad lunchett. If you get hungry while you shop you can walk right over and order an all American burger and admire the decor that transports you back in time! Don't forget to try their amazing shakes too!
The California Living Museum or C.A.L.M.
CALM is a wildlife rehabilitation center, so when you go visit you get to see some awesome animals and critters that are local to California! When we last visited they had just opened up a water room or as they call it the California Coastal Room, where we actually got participate in a touch tank! I loved it! They also have a kids play area, a kids train ( only operates certain months) and a reptile room. Also, during the holidays they hold an annual holiday lights show. CALM is cheap, fun and great for a day trip.
Hart Park is a large park, to bring the whole family and the dogs too. You can take advantage of the scenery and take some beautiful outdoor pictures. If you are lucky enough you can view the wild peacocks, they can be a bit shy and most days I have trouble spotting them but, if you can get a glimpse they can be quite a sight. This park also has a lot of other activities from fishing to hiking and in the summer, if you're brave enough, tubing. I went tubing two years in a row, we brought our own floaties walked up the river and got in and floated all the way down, it can be scary and if you aren't safe the current can be dangerous, most days there are plenty of people in the water tubing with you and families with their tubs all tied together but, you always want to stay safe especially with the kiddos. If you do go tubing, take a veteran with you and please watch your bottoms for rocks! Last year we were in for a bumpy surprise; fun, yet painful!
Starting off at Sandrini’s Public house, walk over to syndicate then to Riley’s tavern take a turn to Jerry’s Pizza and Pub for a snack and then over to the Library. Promise you will have a good time.
Brainy Actz Escape Rooms
Okay, this place is pretty freaking cool, and It's not just for adults, you can take the kids too, I mean if you want.. Not only does this place have escape rooms but they offer so much more! Ax throwing for those extremist to Succulent classes for our lovers-not-so-fighters out there. Among those they also have rage rooms, archery, and even Nerf Wars.
Salt 7 even
This place is a little pricey and you have to make an appt because they only have three rooms. If you are into healing and relaxation then this is the place for you. Salt 7 Even is home to Bakersfield deprivations tanks. What is a deprivation tank you ask? Well, it’s this weird alien-like tub filled with room temperature water and a bunch of salt. My first experience with sensory deprivation was here and at first, I was pretty intimidated, I had heard of all kinds of things happening from Hallucinations, meeting aliens and the sort, but I also heard a lot about relaxation, better sleep, mental clarity and even relief to body pain. I went with my mom and we definitely didn’t meet any aliens. The staff is friendly and informative and will walk you through every step. I would highly recommend participating in something like this at least once in your life. I can say it does feel like you’re floating in your own mind, and after you leave you’ll be so relaxed you'll want to go straight home and take a nap!
Buck Ownes Crystal Palace
Here at the Crystal palace you can visit the Buck Owens Museum, Grab a bite to eat then grab your dancing shoes and have a great time during their live events! Make sure to check out who is playing the days you visit so you can grab your tickets, This place is always full! But who can stay away from food that good? Order the country fried steak when you're there, you will not be disappointed!
Remington Hot Springs
Okay, so this one is not so much IN Bakersfield but it's right up the canyon. Remington Hot springs are these Hidden-Not-SO-Hidden man-made hot springs that are open to the public. They are well maintained and actually very pretty to the eye. They are a little bit of a hike from the dirt parking area, but once you get down to them it's breathtaking. The Sound of the Rushing River right beside the incredibly stone-paved pools can really set the mood. With that being said BEWARE of the never-ending streakers that love to take this place over. You're technically not supposed to be butt naked in there, but people take it upon themselves anyways. Best not to take the kids.
Well, there you have it. My list of the top places to check out while in Bakersfield, Now I’d like to remind you that I am very proud of my home town and well aware that It has so much more to offer and I didn’t cover all of the city’s gems! So stay tuned for more!
with much love, Ali V.
